DC Drives

Where a DC motor needs controlled speed — or has to drive and brake in both directions — a PHASECON thyristor drive does the work. We build single-quadrant and regenerative drives, and still replace the mag-amp and motor-generator sets that some plants are only now retiring.

Smooth, controllable DC torque

A thyristor DC drive rectifies and regulates the armature (and, where needed, the field) supply to a DC motor, giving you steady speed under changing load. Our single-quadrant drives cover straightforward speed control; our regenerative drives add controlled braking and full bi-directional (four-quadrant) operation for winders, hoists and reversing duty.

Many of the drives we supply are direct replacements for magnetic amplifiers and MG sets that are no longer economic to maintain. In most cases we can reuse the existing motor and much of the panel, so the upgrade stays affordable.

Still running a mag-amp or MG set?

A modern thyristor drive is smaller, more efficient and far easier to support. We’ll assess your existing installation and quote a like-for-like replacement.

Control cards used in these systems

Every PHASECON controller is built around one of our own trigger or regenerative control cards. Each has a downloadable manual.
